Kottayam, A District in Kerala is blooming with the color pink. With monsoon receding, a pink wave of water lilies has made its way up the backwater villages of Kottayam, attracting tourists in huge numbers.
Official estimates suggest that close to 15,000 people have visited Malarikkal — the bloom epicenter — over the past days to catch the wonderful view of the sun rising and set over a sea of ambal bloom.
Besides Malarikkal, people have also swarmed the polder banks in the connecting villages covered by the bloom.
The visitor influx this season has been so unprecedented that people of Ambattukavu, where the bloom is underway, has established a locally owned tourism enterprise.
“To begin with, a two-day tourism festival Ambal Vasantham (Waterlily bloom) will be staged whereby the visitors will be offered boat trips through the flowers, besides other water-tourism related activities. There are no restrictions on plucking these flowers as will anyway wither away within a week with the onset of the farming season.
Aimed at integrating the natural splendor with local tourism, the River Linking Initiative has drawn up new plans to manage the crowds from the next season onwards. These include the opening of more homestay facilities, launching of water-tourism activities and deployment of crowd-managers, among others. some kerala tour operators in Kerala are also planning to provide kerala tour packages to malarikkal as well.
